Our Healing Approach is Rooted in Love

Love-In-Action

Liberty’s Healing Enterprise is an African American inter-generational healing community rooted in love! We offer communal engagement and practical support to children, youth and families at our two sites in North Minneapolis to mitigate the opportunity gap and the impacts of generational poverty. We anchor the chaos of racism and poverty rooted in loving relationships - with each other and with our youth and families. Love can be messy and hard, and it is the only way to create lasting change.

Love: We develop loving relationships among our staff and with the youth and families we serve. We believe love is the core foundation for lasting change.

Holistic: Our programs address the multi-layered needs of program participants.

Evidence Based: Evidence-based practices guide our program design. We use quantitative and qualitative data to drive program improvements.

Community Led: Our staff are members of the community; many participated in Healing Enterprise programs themselves.

Healing Centered: We consider ourselves healers in need of healing and offer our staff support for their own wellbeing.

When we can see ourselves as we truly are and accept ourselves, we build the necessary foundation for self-love…whether we learn how to love ourselves and others will depend on the presence of a loving environment. Self love cannot flourish in isolation.

Our Healing Initiatives

Rooted in loving relationships and evidence-based practices, our Healing Enterprise initiatives – a new HomePlace healing center for birthing families and 21st Century Academy for K-College students – move the needle on outcomes for maternal and infant health, youth success in school and college and career readiness. These efforts grew out of the Northside Healing Space, which continues to host gatherings and groups that share our healing mission. And the space will also be the location for HomePlace as a fully operational initiative in 2026.

Healers in Need of Healing

We see our own Liberty community as real-time evidence for our ways of working. We are an inter-generational primarily African America community. We face the challenges of generational poverty, historical racial trauma from enslavement, and present day racism which impedes our culture and our individual pathways to opportunity. And we succeed every day as a community of healers in need of healing. We first work to be on our own healing journey while we break through the challenges we face. And then we walk side-by-side with our children, youth and parents as they find their own worth, well-being, joy and meaning as levers for individual and community progressive healing. Following the evidence-based ideas of Shawn Ginwright, we flip trauma into healing and action. We get to the root with our youth and families, and heal together.

Liberty community anchors the Healing Enterprise

Our number one value is to cherish and prioritize relationships, because we understand that it’s in the relationships that the healing happens.

A Path to College for Youth

At 21st Century Academy, we create an environment where youth feel they can reach their full potential, envision a successful future, feel connected to a community, and build on their cultural identity. In the midst of the continued struggle in North Minneapolis for African American youth, 21st Century created a community of love.

A Healing Center for Birthing Families

To address the alarming disparities, we are launching HomePlace, a healing center where we will wrap around families with culturally-centered healing supports, doulas (birth coaches), parenting education, communal support, and practical resources. The program will continue to assist families through the first year of an infant’s life to ensure a healthy start.

Sacred Space for Healing

The Northside Healing Space opened in 2007 as a community-driven solution to healing the trauma that exists in North Minneapolis. We are grounded in the knowledge that the voices, experience, wisdom, and leadership of those most impacted by the trauma of racism and poverty will show us the path to healing. For themselves, for their families, and for our community. All of our efforts grew out of the Northside Healing Space ethic.
